I was curious if someone could direct me to a comparison (benefits/drawbacks) of using a monitor over a tv display, as a sole computer display for computer gaming, and not using it for internet TV or movie watching?

Thanks in advance.

Basically there are no negatives of using a TV. As long as it's an HDTV.

An LCD is an LCD big or small it's the same thing.
If you want to play games on it I would suggest you pay attention to a few items.

-Contast Ratio
-Refresh Rate
-Resolution

If you are going to use a plasma don't worry about the contrast ratio or refresh rate, plasmas tend to be very good in those departments.

If you are going to use a DLP once again you can ignore the contrast ratio and refresh rate.

Because plasmas and DLP tvs tend to have such a good contrast ratio they would likely be better than a computer monitor you are using... (Unless you are using the old CRT style monitor [they tend to have very good contrast ratio but suffered from the need of an...

Generally, I would say go ahead and use your TV for gaming... I do...
One more thought.. Make sure you have a video card that can output some good HD resolutions!

Well I haven't built my computer yet, waiting until things settle down a little. I have my Win7 DVD just sitting there, waiting to be installed. I have to buy the parts first.

Anyway, I was thinking about maybe looking into one of the LED LCDs, as they are beautiful, which was the main premise, but if TVs were bad in general, then i wouldn't consider it at all.

I'm using a 32" Hdtv. Thought I would only use it for gaming, but it looks good enough I'm using it for everything. I have it wall mounted and have more desk space than when i used a 19" monitor.

The one problem with using a moniter is that you tend to sit closer to them, so things tend to look a little bit crappy.

So make sure that whatever your using that you dont sit right next to it 😛

Wait, the problem with using a monitor over a TV is that you sit closer and so it looks crappy? But if I use a TV as a monitor, wouldn't the same conclusion apply? Or are you saying there is something specific about using a monitor and sitting close to it?

Im just saying, regardless of whether your playing on a tv or a moniter, don't sit close to the screen.
Games look better from 6 or 7 feet away 😛
