Hi everyone,

I'm interested in the following monitor:
Dell U2515H-ADZG (https://www.amazon.co.uk/DELL-U2515H-ADZG-25-Inch-Monitor/dp/B00P6O3YYO/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1485456992&sr=1-5&keywords=IPS%2BQHD%2Bmonitor&th=1)

However, it looks like it requires a DisplayPort connection into my laptop (Asus X550JX), which only has HDMI and VGA (Mini D-sub 15-pin) connections, and from what I've read, HDMI connection does not support the full 2560 x 1440 DP resolution that this monitor offers - is this true? Also, does the graphics card limit the maximum resolution (my laptop has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M and Intel HD Graphics 4600)?

What can I do to connect this DisplayPort-ready monitor to my HDMI/VGA-only laptop and get the full 2560 x 1440 DP resolution?

Thanks! D

Thanks delaro :)

Would this monitor (Asus VX24AH) allow 2560 x 1440 resolution with the connections I have on my laptop?

(The product description says "The VX24AH features a host of connectivity options that include HDMI for native WQHD, plus D-sub for full HD 1080p content transmission").

I'm not sure that'll work. OP needs HDMI (source) to DP (display). That adapter is DP (source) to HDMI (display), and it's unclear if it's bi-directional. HDMI to DP seems to be much harder to find, and more expensive.

Also, HDMI 1.3 and newer will support 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz. So he should be able to get that monitor working, provided he can find a suitable adapter. The only adapter I was able to find was $50, so probably better to find a 2560x1440 monitor which supports that resolution over HDMI.

That cable Delaro listed won't work. That cable is for DisplayPort being on your Laptop and HDMI on your Monitor. What you need is a true HDMI to DP converter. You won't be able to get that 2560 x 1440 unless you go with straight DP. 1080p is your limit though regardless. My suggestion is go with a different monitor that will do HDMI at a different resolution.
HDMI to DP converter I was referencing.

I just looked the specifications of your laptop. It appears the max it can output would be 1920x1080. Sadly there isn't a way around this. If your laptop supported higher resolutions then yes this monitor would work, sadly yours doesn't.

Thanks BlackLegBrian

That's a shame to hear... What is it that's limiting the max resolution? I thought the NVIDIA graphics card could handle the 2560 x 1440 resolution? (spec here: http://www.gpuzoo.com/GPU-NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_950M.html)

You are right Hdmi to Display port needs a active connection "Powered Box" not a passive but that one is a bit expensive and has it's share of issues like bad signal and premature failure.

Thanks delaro!

I wish I could find that product here in Europe (on Amazon.co.uk)...

What do you think about what BlackLegBrain said: "I just looked the specifications of your laptop. It appears the max it can output would be 1920x1080".I couldn't see what is limiting the max resolution? I thought the NVIDIA graphics card could handle the 2560 x 1440 resolution? I was looking at this monitor also which seems to connect via HDMI:
Asus VX24AH

Would this allow 2560 x 1440 resolution with the connections (and spec) I have on my laptop?

Hope you're having a nice weekend :)

Thanks for your message BlackLegBrian :)

My laptop has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (the mobile/laptop version) graphics card plus the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600. So it sounds like my laptop should be fine then? :)

Is it right that the Asus VX24AH would connect via the HDMI connection (both monitor and laptop) and display 2560 x 1440 resolution?
