Monitor with Horizonal/Vertical lines running through it

I'm not really sure if I have selected the correct catergory/sub-catergory but I just bought a Acer Aspire X1420G computer. I already had a good monitor that worked fine with my old emachine but when I connected it to the acer I got hundreds of very thin horizonal/vertical lines running through it. The shape of the lines look very similar to the upper left corner of a picture frame. I have tried calibrating the colors, I bought a new cable cord and I can't seem to fix it. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? And Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have to offer...Pat

It is not impossible that there is something wrong with the graphics hardware in the Acer.

If it's the graphics card, would the lines still appear on the monitor even with the cpu turned off? Because when the computer is off and I turn on the monitor you can still see the lines but with a black background.

If the lines are on the screen when the computer is not running it is a screen problem!
