What is the difference between the BNC connectors I can use with my monitor or the "normal" 15-pin D-SUB connector? Is this just for compatibility of some sort or does using the BNC connectors give me an advantage somehow?

The BNC connectors are for what is called "component" video and give you higher a quality image.
