This is the nail in the coffin for anyone on the sidelines hoping the Geforce DeFX line will improve in performance.

Looks like NV has once and for all lost the battle for DX9.

From anandtech
No doubt you heard about GeForce FX fiasco in Half-Life 2. In your opinion, are these results representative for future DX9 games (including Doom III) or is it just a special case of HL2 code preferring ATI features, as NVIDIA suggests?

JOHN CARMACK-
Unfortunately, it will probably be representative of most DX9 games. Doom has a custom back end that uses the lower precisions on the GF-FX, but when you run it with standard fragment programs just like ATI, it is a lot slower. The precision doesn't really matter to Doom, but that won't be a reasonable option in future games designed around DX9 level hardware as a minimum spec.
Wait all you want FX owners but the hard cold truth is out and the war is over this time.

Yes, it has a bit more weight to it if you mention it was John Carmack, programmer of the original DOOM, QUAKE, and the upcoming DOOM 3.

That would be a man by the name of John Carmack. Heard of him?

The signs that Nvidea were struggling became apparent back when the 5800/vacuum cleaner thing was released and then removed like it never existed. The 5900ultra is good on paper, but just isn't as "brainy" as its ATI counterpart. I really hope NV come up with some major a$$ hauling GFX card tricks next time around to keep ATI on their toes (and prices down).

Coolsquirtle are you going to change your sig any time soon? Because you don't seem to be an nVidia fanboy anymore.

Spud is fully aware of the problems with the 5900U. I think he's just giving the det50's a chance before he finally gives up. He has a friend who he can sell the card to if it doesn't work out.

Ah damnit. Now I feel bad.

BTW, I noticed your Audigy doesnt support 60sounds in your 3dmark2k3. I think if you update your drivers you can run that test.
I also have an audigy and I think they might have implemented the additional voices in the latest drivers.
My drivers - 5.12.1.383
Yours - 5.12.1.253

Though yours blows mine away in no sound and 24 sounds. This is credited to the fact you have a 3ghz CPU.

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Radeon 9800NP, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

Yeah, actually it was a patch origianally only availible at THG-France, it has since been incorporated in the latest drivers (as of beginning of Aug? That's when the THG patch expired and I had to get the new drivers).

The THG patch was great since it gave me the extra sound support months before it was offered by Creative.

So Spud, just update your drivers, it's also supposed to add about 2-5 % to performance in games too. Just FYI.

I had some strange problems with the ones that were available before the august release.
IIRC it was something like the audio coming out of 2 speakers even though I had selected 4.1. But it was only in MP3s or cds, something like that.
It was a common issue, I had wait it out till august.

Athlon 1700+, Epox 8RDA (NForce2), Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB 8MB cache, 2x256mb Crucial PC2100 in Dual DDR, Radeon 9800NP, Audigy, Z560s, MX500

Well actually if it is a stereo source it should go through stereo unless artificial surround is selected (that's the way it wroks in stereos too).

What's likely happened is that the creative drivers DEFAULT you to dolby prologic or some other form of compensation and default to match your setup unless you disable it. As I usually use headphones I wouldn't have noticed. But I did notice alot more vivideness and sound(s) from my headphones with the new drivers.

OH well, at least it worked out in the end.
