I am pretty new to this pc building business and i am confuse which cpu to pick. there a lot of option and it is has become hard to pick one. so can anyone explain me should i go for higher clock speed or more cores. my main priority would be gaming.

Neither is very indicative of overall performance when comparing different CPU brands. An Intel Core i3 6100 is a 2 core CPU clocked at 3.7ghz that often outperforms the 8-core 5ghz AMD FX-9590 in gaming. Better would be to give us a budget and specific use, and have us make recommendations within that budget, with explanations as to why we recommended those parts.

Question from AakSinInd : "Which processor to pick?"

The i3 6100 is alot more powerful for gaming, its single core performance is much higher. Also an i3 6100 would give you a highly upgradable build down the road, and it runs much more efficient in terms of temperature and power draw. An i3 6100 would also be better than an FX 8350 for gaming.

my budget is $500 and my main priority would be gaming along with light tasks like browsing and school work. i won't be using it for video editing or stuff like that

no just the all the stuff inside the cabinet, already have monitor, keyboar, mouse, speakers and windows

Here you go, sorry it went slightly above your budget, but ever dollar is worth it. An i3 6100 paired with fast memory can really come close to closing the gap with an i5 6500, and with a Z170 motherboard you can overclock it.
