More Crap in 2004

More junk to clutter the 'Value DX9 market'

Man we're going to have to work extra hard at explaining why somoene's new FX5700LE/R9600SE sucks.

With this performance level can't I pick the Matrox P650?

I think if I were worried about gaming, the FX5200U. Under most conditions it will outperform the R9600SE, and the ones it wouldn't, neither would be good at. For day to day windows work, probably the R9600SE because they are usually passive, whereas the FX is not.

The FX5200SE of course would be a different story and totally useless IMO. Even an FX5600XT would come behind those two cards listed above.

nVidia's naming scheme seems even more than ATI's to be a way to "trick" buyers into getting lower performance cards. I thought they made more money on faster versions? What a bunch of idiots.

It's volumes. They have a larger margin on higher end cards, but if people can be dupped into believing they can get and FX5700 class card for the same price as an FX5200/5600Ultra, then why not? Even if it performs lower. And due to the RAM the actual card likely costs less to make than those Ultras. Many more cards times larger margin that the others in it's class means more money.

There is room for the R9300 and R9400, I don't see why they don't call the R9600SE that, other than to fool people. Same goes for 5000, 5100, 5300, 5400 and 5500.

Well idjits will get screwed and we'll have to hear them whine about their 3Dmk03 scores here, but I'm not too sympathetic if they didn't do their homework.

Speaking of which, the price of the R9600SE should come down with this event occuring;

SE was a bad naming call on the part of ATI, they should have stuck with LE and VE.

Well, a 128 bit 5600 wouldn't be all that bad if it was cheap enough I guess.

But a 64-bit 5700? Yuck. Just another 9600SE...

I tend to agree, the market is so saturated with unsold FX5600Us and regular 5600s such that really there is no need. However they can confuse a few people who were waiting for the FX5700 series to come down in price and now see it for $50 cheaper than a month ago. Also the DELL users will love to have FX5700 graphics in their systems, it will blow away all those puny FX5600ULTRAs, yeah!

MArketing, that's all it's about.

WOW FX5700's in a Dell! sweet!

What kills me is Dell has its top XMS gaming rig which they claim is

"The ultimate technology and design in a PC. Perfect for demanding multi-media such as intense gaming, video editing and large graphic files."

"The Dimension XPS is built for Power Users (such as the extreme gamer) looking for advanced computing capabilities in a conventional desktop."

Yet it comes standard with an FX5200 in it!!!! What????

If I ordered a $1800 PC that was marketed as an ultimate power user/gaming rig and it came with an FX5200, I'd be ticked off big time with my new expensive 3D Gaming slide projector. Yet many people don't know enough to customize with a R9800 Pro and get suckered into these crappy advertized special things.

Which would you take, an FX5200U, or a 9600SE?
I would take FX5200U
