More vram in vr?

TL;DR is second to last sentence. I will be buying a 980ti or a R9 Fury X soon. I have been trying to be really unbiased during the decision but one thing I saw was that if you pushed a game like GTA V to its limits with 4k and 8xmsaa then the fury x could not handle it with only a few frames and the 980ti with sorta playable. This was due to the vram. I am mainly upgrading for VR and was wondering which card would actually be better for vr. I think the main limiting factor is the vram. I know it is hbm in the Fury X but that does not mean it can fully handle the same load as 6gb gddr5. I also like that the cooling on the Fury more than the 980ti. For this though I am mainly asking if VR uses more vram then regular gaming. Thanks for reading/Answering!

It depends on the resolution of the vr headset you use. the Rift will be 2160x1200, so 4gb vram should be just fine, for now atleast.

No, its 2 1080x1200 screens, for a total resolution of 2160x1200.
