A few months ago im editing a video and suddenly my pc turned off and doesn't turn on then i tried a different psu and then two of the MOSFETS, right side of the socket blew up. CPU was i7 860 OCd to 3.4GHz (max temp is 70°C @ LinX Stress tests)
Now i already built a better rig now with 4th gen i5.
Im wondering is the cpu still alive because if it's still alive i will delid and then build a pc for my brother.

I have heard that sometimes motherboards sacrifice themselves to save the CPU. Is this true?

Old pc specs was:
i7 860 @3.4GHz 1.3V
MSi P55-G55 (?)
ASUS GTX 960 Turbo
8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Enlight 700W 80+ Bronze, then Enlight 600W (this one made the MOSFETS blew up)

Back in the pentium days someone gave me a system that wouldn't boot in its own and it seemed like the power supply was shot. So I took a known working power supply and connected it up and as soon as I hit the switch some capacitors on the motherboard popped. I don't think the power supply was the issue or the cpu/memory, but I think the motherboard itself was bad. I even checked for swollen capacitors or anything beforehand.

So sometimes it's just the motherboard and the power supply could be fine.
