Mother board now running x4 core how do i change back

I have had my pc for a number of years and just recently something has change in the set up, I can see after booting the front page of the mother board and now in the right corner it say x4 core. it never showed that before . I don't want to mess around but I also don't want to pay a fortune for something that may just be changing a setting to restore back to normal

what motherboard do you have? what cpu do you have? try entering bios by pressing delete when the computer is starting, load fail-safe defaults and then select the option to save and exit setup.
