Ok, so here is what happened. I had just finished building my rig, and I was in BIOS to look at my cpu tempreture to make sure that my liqued cooler was working. The computer had been on for 15 minnutes at most by now. I turned the computer off to get it ready to install windows 7, and when I turned it back on, it started to boot, and then after 5 seconds it shut off, and smoak started to pour out (no joke). I opened it up to find that my CPU had been compleatly fried, the inner upper left corner of the bottom of the cpu was charred black, and the corrosponding location on the cpu socket was also burnt. Obviously, the cpu and motherboard are both dead. I am RMA'ing all of the affected components back, but I do not know what the hell caused the problem. What things are capable of frying both the cpu and its socket? these are the only components with any physical damage. I dont know if the cpu is at fualt, or the motherboard, or the power supply. Did I perhaps screw the water cooler on too tight? I need to know what components potentialy could have caused something like this. I will list my specs below. Thanks.

Edit: The only problems I had to overcome when building the computer was that the backplate for the motherboard stuck out too much into the motherboards seating area, so I had to push the motherboard somewhat against it to seat it properly. Also the Corsair CX750's 24 pin connecter was a bitch to get attached, i had to use a stack of cards to help support that area of the motherboard while I was pushing it in to prevent the board from bending, but that is a problem with the whole CX line anyway.

CPU: Intel i7 4790k
Motherboard: Asus Maximus 7 hero
Liqued Cooler: Corsair h105
PSU: Corsair CX750
RAM: Corsair Vengence 2x8gb
Case: Thermaltake v71

Any help is appriciated. Thanks.

UPDATE*** So I found a diagram of the socket layout for the haswell chips, and the short circut happened in the PEG area of the socket, and the power are is on the other side, way away from the affected area. Isent the PEG area where the cpu communicates with the PCI-E slots? I did not even have a graphics card installed.

A) CX series is crap. Utter Crap. Only the higher end Corsair's are good.
B)It's because you messed with the back plate. It must have caused a short circuit. I have a friend who screwed his mobo DIRECTLY TO THE CASE WITH REGULAR SCREWS. No stand offs to prevent any circuit. Needless to say, he fried most of his components. It wasn't as... flashy... as yours, but the same thing happened. Worst case scenario, you lost everything but the case

Ok, well I am getting a Seasonic X-850 now. I did not mess with the backplate though, I only put on the plastic one that comes with the liqued cooler, that was definatly not the cause. I also had the mobo on the standofs that were allready preinstalled in the case, and used the moobo screws to screw it in, so i dont see how that could have been it either.

Yea it looks like the guts of the AX 760 are made by seasonic, corsair just rebranded it.
