Hi. Long time reader, first time asker. I haven't done this in a long time, but I'm building a new computer, and I haven't been able to figure out the answer myself. The Motherboard Gigabyte H370 AORUS GAMING 3 WIFI (rev. 1.0) has two m.2 slots. I plan on putting my OS on a Samsung EVO 970 m.2 pcie gen3.0 x4 nvme in the first.
The second m.2 slot will accept either m.2 sata, or pci-e 3.0 x2 nvme. I will be using whichever I pick for frequent backups and otherwise light storage, and would like to use the slot on the board so I don't have to mess with the extra cables. I'm looking at either SAMSUNG 860 EVO Series M.2 2280 500GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-N6E500BW or the other choice is Corsair Force MP300 M.2 2280 480GB PCI-Express 3.0 x2, NVME 1.3 3D TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CSSD-F480GBMP300.
If I went with the SATA I doubt I'd notice a huge difference speedwise, and that really isn't an issue, but according to the mobo manual, it looks like if I use the second slot for m.2 sata, I'll lose a sata port. This is really not ideal because I plan on putting a number of 3.5" hard drives in the build and don't want to lose the one sata header if I can avoid it. I will be needing it.
So my first question is: If I use the Corsair Force MP300 x2 in the second m.2, it does not look to me like the pcie x4 expansion slot will become unavailable; is this correct? I don't want to lose the use of the expansion slot if I can avoid it, because I will need to use it sometime in the future.
My second question is: if the above is correct, is there any other good reason not to use the Corsair x2 nvme card? Since I'll just be using it for storage and backups, I won't be using it a lot, but some of the files are going to be pretty large. Do you think the heat generated would be a big deal? Are there any other drawbacks you can think of?
I'd appreciate your input; what do you think?
