Motherboard causing hard freezes?

So I'm not sure if this is the cause of my hard freezes but I've tried EVERYTHING too get my computer to stop freezing... what happens is I'll be casually browsing my desktop or internet browser and it'll just freeze up on me! The sound will stutter and I can't get anything to respond unless I shut it down via the power supply or unplug the computer entirely. I'd also like too note that this never happens when I'm playing a game or anything that requires full screen. I've already ran memtest86 overnight and have received no errors. I've also made sure nothing was wrong on the motherboard or power supply by checking the capacitors. It just baffles me and I don't know why this is happening... these freezes happen at random as well.. but once again will only happen if I'm on my desktop or on Firefox. I've also switched breakers to my computers outlets to make sure it wasn't that.

What mobo, CPU (and stock or OCed), DRAM (preferably model # and how many sticks)........do you have the latest BIOS? all mobo, video, etc Drivers up to date (check the mobo makers site, don't use those on the CD/DVD that came with the mobo)

Gigabyte H55M-S2V S-series Motherboard.

Intel I3 Processor Quad Core 54 @3.07 ghz 2.79 ghz

(2) DDR3 4gb RAM

I'd also like to mention my computer is around 3 and a half years old... custom built.


And no now that you said that I've never updated my MOBO's Drives other than the orginal installation disk.

Edit: I've updated the BIO'S and I still have the same issue.

My favorite solution i've seen on this forum is to take the motherboard out, fit it too say a.. wooden board, connect everything up, and then try it.

Least you'll have refitted all the connectors and removed possibilities of it shorting out.

If your system is Watercooled like mine, then we'll have to look into other possibilities (unless you want the hassle of taking your loop apart! :lol: )



I'm in the same situation, and to be honest it could be alot of things. And yeah leaving it on without touching it, playing games, watching vids.. it wont freeze :lol:



Theres also the possibility of running it in safemode for a while with networking and seeing if it freezes then, while doing your stuff.

But i'd defo recommend taking everything out if you can!

It's 2 separate sticks of 4gb and the process is a Intel® Core™ i3-540 Processor
(4M Cache, 3.06 GHz) if that's the more specific thing you're looking for.

Try going into BIOS, and look at DRAM Voltage, should be at 1.5, try changing to 1.55 and see what happens

I changed it and I'll let my computer run a full day tomorrow and let you know if it crashes at any point in time.

Welp, I turn on my computer this morning and not even 10 minutes in I freeze up. So I'm still having the issue. :/

Alright I did that, and it seems to be running normally... I guess I'll try to run in this mode as long as I can without it freezing.

Yeah, just do whatever you can to make it freeze, if it doesnt, it's a possible software/driver fault. So we'll narrow it down from there once you let us know what happens!!

Welp, turns out that after a full day of testing it froze 3 times... even in safe mode.
