I have built a new PC with an ASUS VII Hero. I had just a SSD installed, no mechanical HDD. Sometimes it will make a grinding sound. I don't really think it is a problem, I'm just curious as to what it is because something in my case keeps rattling cause of it, I think it is a cable tie or something vibrating cause of it. I had a MSI Z87 Gaming 5 and it also made the same chipset grinding sound.

Does anyone know what that sound is?

I had a case once that made a sound from where the metal touched the top to the bottom. Once I isolated it, a small piece of foam in the right spot shut it up.

Try pressing on various points on the case to see if it quiets. It sounded kind of like a hard drive but it was not.
Did you reuse any parts from your old rig that was making the same sound (especially as digitaldoc suggests, fans)? Your description sounds a lot like a failing fan I had in one of my systems: it would be fine for a while then noisily grind to a halt, restart, and spin quietly as if nothing had happened. Failing HDD bearings usually make a continuous whine but since you said you have no mechanical HDD I'll assume that's not it...

No its not the fans, I opened the case and fans are silent. Even while the noise is happening if I change the fan speeds it still persists. Its a stock Fractal Design Define R4. No added fans. The sound sounds like a HDD reading heavily. like something is working hard.

No parts were reused. All brand new.

This is pretty much what it sounds like. I know thats a HDD though. The noise reminded me of a HDD even though I didn't have one installed. I put a 3TB hitachi in it. Im going to disconnect it and try running some things of the two SSDs i got and see if I was just going insane.
