Hello glorious people of the internet i bring you all a question that i haven't been able to find the answer to.

My current PC is at the end of its life its an Acer Aspire M3970.
My question is what CPUs could i possibly stick in there to extend its life until i bring together all my parts for a new build. I know the board can handle Sandy CPUs but i am not sure about IVY's

Info i have been able to find on the board
Acer IPISB-VR

Please people of the internet save my from the miserable experience that is gaming on an I3-2100

You are opening a can of worms, that could be expensive.

The Acer Aspire M3970 is a tower PC, right? See this thread. http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2346079/aspire-m3970-gpu-psu-upgrade.html

You may well need a new PSU too. Any CPU will cost over $200, and you could start with the i5 stout 2500K, but your system may be a challenge to overclock. Whatever you put in there is going to be wasted when you upgrade.

You could get a Haswell i3 at 3.7Ghz and decent overclock-ready motherboard for the same price. (You would need a new OS too, but that would be needed with any motherboard upgrade)

@DonkeyOatie I already have an upgraded 600 watt PSU had to when i got a 290X. I would buy a haswell but i don't know if the board could run it i remember reading someone that bought a 4th gen I5 and the board wouldn't POST with it. Also yes that's the tower PC

What I was saying was that for the price of a 2500K, at over $200, about the cheapest, best upgrade CPU , you could get an entry-level Haswell, like the i3 4170 AND the motherboard to run it and any future CPU, like an i7 4790K, you might buy later. The only down-side being a new OS required for the upgrade (which seems inevitable).

You did not mention the 290X, so I did not realize you must have a PSU upgrade.

and Ivy is even more expensive as are the i7s.

Now the 2500K is a better hip that the 4170, especially when overclocked. Only you know your future.
