I have an ASUS PRIME H310M-E R2.0 Intel Motherboard with a Intel Core i5 9400F 2.9GHz 6 Core CPU.

I would like to upgrade the CPU but have limited funds and have been looking at a used
Intel Core i9-7920X 12-Core (2.9GHz) 16.5MB L3 Cache, Excellent Condition A.

Would this be compatible with my ASUS motherboard and is there anything I should be aware of when buying a used CPU?

Thanks

Nope, the latter processor will not drop onto that motherboard socket. You can learn more about the CPU's compatible with your motherboard from this list;
https://www.asus.com/bd/motherboard...pdesk_knowledge?model2Name=PRIME-H310M-E-R2-0

To add, even if you could drop in an i9, I wouldn't do so due to the lackluster VRM design on your board.

Where are you located, what is your budget for your CPU upgrade, what is your preferred site for purchase and why are you upgrading?

i9-7920X requires X299 chipset motherboard.
Your motherboard is not compatible.

On your motherboard you could install
i7-8700/K - 6 cores/12 threads
i7-9700/K - 8 cores/8 threads
i9-9900/K (8 cores/16 threads) - while compatible, would probably be to much for it.
Your board has poor VRM design/no VRM cooling.

Thanks for the replies.
I am located in Essex. I don't have an actual budget but the cost of an i9 is more than I would want to pay. I use my PC for flight simulation (x-plane and MSFS) so wanted to upgrade as this would allow me to purchase MSFS 2024 if I want in the future.

I will look at the i7 options.

Which would be better the i7-8700/K or the i7-9700/K?

If I fit an i7 what benefits could I expect to see both with x-plane or MSFS 2022/4 and PC use generally?

I have recently installed an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU

Thanks

Yes, an 8700k is under a hundred used, but you can get a board and CPU fairly cheap.

I was wondering if the current Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO CPU Cooler and Corsair VS Series VS450 450W 80+ PSU will still be OK with the Intel Core i7-9700 3.00GHz Socket LGA1151 Processor CPU (SRG13) I am intending to purchase
