Recently bought all new components for a new rig after using an Asus RoG Laptop for the past several years. Components are the following:
Motherboard: MSI H110M Gaming L1151 chipset
CPU: i5 6400
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Frio Silent 14
Memory: 16GB DDR4 2133Ghz Patriot brand
Graphics: EVGA GeForce 1060 - 6GB RAM.
HD1: 1TB Western Digital Drive 7200RPM
HD2: 120 PNY SSD
Power Supply: Corsair CX570
So I wire this all up in a new Mid-tower case, and turn it on. The power supply comes on, the front intake fan comes on, but not fan at the back of the case, the cpu fan, nor the gpu fan. (I double check all those connections and they are fine. In fact, if I plug in the cpu fan or the fan into the back into the connection that the intake fan connector is plugged into, they each come on, but neither of the other connectors work. So the fans themselves work, just not the connectors.
No idea about the GPU at this point, I'm unsure if the fan will spin or not if the system doesn't post, which at this point it won't. Additionally, there is a solid red light, that is the CPU indicator, but at this point I don't realize that, I thought it was just another light.
So as this point, I realize that there is another connector near the top right that is labled JPWR2, that I don't have plugged in. It is a 4-pin connector, and I thought it was optional. But they I read and see that it is not. So I have a 2x4pin connector labelled CPU coming out of my PS. So I plug in one side - it's keyed, and I turn it on. I smell acrid smoke, so I turn off the PS with the switch on the back. Nothing changed when I powered it on briefly. No additional fans/GPU, etc.
I pull everything out of the case, made sure all the standoffs are in the correct location. Realize the red light is for CPU, and re-seat everything. Plug it back in out of the case on top of anti-static. Just leave in memory and CPU. Power it on again, and poof a spark and a chip actually catches fire - have to blow it out.
So - question is, what is the problem? Is this a bad MB? Could it be the power supply? Should I be worried about any other components? Like the GPU - why wouldn't the fan spin? Could any of the HDD's been damaged?
I plan on testing the power supply tomorrow with a multi-meter to test the output, but I'm hoping everything boils down to just a bad Motherboard.
One other thing - the MB came from FRY's and they do not take damaged items back, and it is very obviously damaged. Can I go through MSI to try and get a replacement?
