Hello,
It is seems that the Intel is an awful company that created a huge inconvenience for its users.
Apparently LGA1151 socket has 2 revisions, and my revision having the top processor for the generation(6700k) has been left off board.
I paid ~1000 Australian dollars for it years ago, and it works perfectly to date.
However, the company has made a revision instead of creating a new socket, and now my CPU has no motherboards supported in sale.
Now when I go to Newegg and look for Lga1151 motherboards - by 1151 they don't mean my processor anymore, the 1151 has been appropriated and rewritten, and all who spent 1000 dollars on a top notch processor are left off board.
I have my MOBO broken, and I was looking to buy a new one for my processor - Lga1151 compatible. None of the results are compatible with Skylake, I even tried pcpartspicker - zero, null, zilch results.

The question: where to buy a new 6700k compatible mobo for a regular home Pc for an adequate price

You'll be looking for z170 or z270 for compatible chipset, used market as said above. Intel has always been this way, two motherboard iterations between generations.

And a grand for 6700k? Im an Aussie too and have never seen an i7 cost that much. $350 msrp https://pcper.com/2015/08/the-intel-core-i7-6700k-review-skylake-first-for-enthusiasts/ conversion rate to aus dollar, 500$ at most.
What would be least expensive: buying a new cpu and motherboard or finding a motherboard for 6700k?

Performance jump from 6700k to current is a significant leap. So up to you if you want to chance second hand. Check ebay for z170 or z270

Buying new will obviously cost more but youll be the first to use those parts. 12th gen 12600k with b660 (ddr4 variant rather than ddr5) motherboard. Reuse your ram (only if ddr4, because some skylake motherboards had ddr3 variants, ddr3 is no longer used since 8th gen) could save some but depends how fast they are and level performance you're after. 3600 is sweet spot atm.
