Hi
I had a problem trying to add more RAM to the motherboard and there was a shortcut .. I see a component burned/broken (and smell very bad).
I hope the processor is still "alive", it is a Athlon XP 133Mhz (I think).
The reference is AXDA2600DKV3C

How can I check if the processor is still alive? I don't see anything wrong externally

Which would be the best motherboard?

Thanks
Kiko

Looks like it's a Socket A and newegg.com has 2 Socket A boards.

The only way I know to find out if the CPU is good would be to try it in a mobo. This is 3 genration old technology so you're not going to have many choices. If it is bad, you could return the board with in 30 days but they'll be a 15% restocking fee. If the CPU is bad, you'd be better off getting a new mobo, CPU, and RAM rather than getting a Socket A CPU and mobo

I really have no direct experience with any of these boards. Asrock seems to have a pretty good reputation for low costs boards, I believe it's made by ASUS. The K7Upgrade-600 seems to be rated high by users but given I don't read French, have no idea what they're saying. In addition, it has SATA connections so if you have to buy a new hard drive, at least you can get a SATA rather than ATA. The Gigabyte looks good but it doesn't appear to have any SATA connectors but again you should make sure of this. Given how old this technology is I wouldn't invest any more than I had to get a reliable board.

The way I would look at these boards is based on chipsets.

There are 2 nForce 2 Ultra 400 boards. These will be the fastest boards, will also include excellent (custom) audio and dual channel memory support. If you are using (or planning to use) Microsoft Vista, they will not be supported with new NVidia drivers.

There is one VIA KT600 board. It will have Vista chipset support, but is otherwise nothing special.

The others are, well they are the others...

Thanks everybody
I think I'll take the Asrock K7NF2-RAID (SATA + nForce 2 Ultra 400 + DualChannel)

Do you think it is compatible with my power supply ?
Jou Jye Electronic Co., Ltd
Switching power supply
Model JJ 250 PP (12 V) (250 W max)

Thanks

New PSU would be a good idea. Minimally you'd want a good 350w, something like an Antec, but a 450 would be better. If you're planning on a new build in the not too distant future and can afford it, 550 0r 600 would make sense but not unless your planning on using it in a newer machine given your current one doesn't need it.

That PSU is only worth about $5. I would replace it with the least expensive quality unit available:
FSP AX450-PN 450watt 12v:2x18a PSU 20+4pin $58+8 5/31/07

The 500 version has an $8 rebate and for now is the same price:

If cash is REALLY tight...
These are not as good but better than junk ones:
Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-400 ATX12V 400W $60-20+0 5/31/07

Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC ATX 430W $40-10+0 5/31/07
