Hey Guys,

I am looking to get the i7-4960X and was looking at the different motherboards. I was looking at the MSI X79A-GD45 Plus but i have heard mixed reviews on the MSI board. I also saw some different memory timing on the MSI board going to a max of 2400. While i do not plan do do any heavy over clocking with the board ideally i would like for the board to have some sort of easy OC feature. One of the reasons I like MSI is because of the OC Genie feature. I know it sounds silly but I am a software guy, working with video editing and 3D design, with not so much hardware experience.

I was looking at the ASUS X79 Deluxe. It seemed like a good board with all the features i would need. I am not looking for a $600 motherbard since i am not doing any heavy OC but i am looking at quality / stability for the brice. I am looking to stick around the $300 ish price range. I dont mind going a bit over, but again im not looking for the $500 boards.

Any feedback you guys can give me will be really appreciated. Thanks a lot!

I know you're not asking for this, but consider the i7 4930k for your needs. Going to the 4960x is paying $400 more for the extra 3MB of L3 cache which won't make any difference in any down to earth use you can give to the processor.

As for the motherboard, for a less expensive option, you have the Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4.

wow, thanks for all the input guys.

I am not really into super over clocking so i think the ASUS Rampage IV Black is a bit much for me. In terms of the 4960X vs 4930K I will do some research but I think ill want to stick with the X. although the extra Cache is not a HUGE deal, it will make me feel better knowing 5 years from i will have a SLIGHT edge. (if that makes sense at all).

The Asus P9X79-WS looks pretty good! How would you guys say that fairs against the X79 Deluxe?

yeah I like the msi boards but I am NOT attached to them. I was looking at the one MSI board but I seem to have gotten mixed reviews about it on Tom's Hardware. While the board look good to me it did bring up a couple concerns about what the memory clocks were. It looks like the board has an 1800 megahertz clock speed? Don't most boards have 1866?maybe I'm being overly cautious but I'd rather spend a couple extra bucks on something I know isn't going to be outdated or not work. That's why I thought maybe the Aces boards be a better bet but they seem to either be really inexpensive or super expensive. do you have any recommendations on what would be a good LGA 2011 board?
