Motherboard fried trying to find out why?

So I was about to watch a movie on my computer and I connected a external blu ray drive as soon as I connected the usb I hear crazy noises coming from inside my computer so I quickly shut everything off.

I can smell burning so I know damage has been done I thought it was the cpu at first but that looks perfectly fine upon further inspection my motherboard and psu wire have completly toasted.

The thing is I have used the external drive plenty of times before. The newest thing that is attached to my pc via psu is a 1400/VA UPS by APC but I don't think that caused it I think it was just bad timing as it has been working great Ive had it for four days.

The reason why I want to know how this happened as I want to prevent it from happening again plus the whole house smells like burning pc parts.

p.s if I replace motherboard and get a new cpu, will I need to format my ssd, as I have a few important files on it that I need.

Uh whatever you do don't use the same power supply . May I know what brand it is ? Also the type of connector. I recommend you dont actually use the same motherboard ..... I would try to use a different power supply. The board probably won't work anymore

Had it for for little over three years. Not sure what you mean by connecter but it's conects to a apc unit which is connected to the mains

It looks like one of ur vrm's overheated and because the heatsinks ws in the way bursted right thru ur motherboards PCB. I had the same this ones it can happen when the thermalpad of ur vrm heatsinks is not making any / good contact.

Ur CPU is could be alright and ur PSU is not the problem.
you could try it on an old pc or just measure the voltage while its on.

measure the voltage on a molex connectors pin 1 and 4 it should be 7volt (5v and 12v) if so its safe to go.

For ur cpu just look at the socket pins is non of them are black / blue its probably alright.

what type of motherboard was it?

The motherboard is gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H

But the psu is unusable as the wires have completely melted and you can see the wires and other cabless in the case have melted

You definitely should not ever try to use that PSU in that or any other computer. Don't even plug it in to the wall socket. Based on your pictures, I would say the motherboard is probably dead also. As for the other components, the only way to know is to test them with a new motherboard and PSU.

I think it was just a coincidence that this happened with your new UPS.

What brand/model PSU was this one? Someone here can suggest a good replacement, depending on the spec's of your system.

Well I dont realy see a reason not to use the PSU again. But you should replace the wires if they are badly damaged. The ones you showed on the picture are just melted by the VRM exploding.
A PSU can handle a load like this without breaking. If ur PSU is dead it killes all ur pc hardware so if that happened ur gpou, ssd, hdd, even fans etc break. But this almost never happens. Or ur PSU could just stop working and ur pc is fine (the normal way). a PSU is always made to breakdown safely for the rest of the hardware. dont worry using it.
The CPU has a fair change of surviving due to VRM design. the VRM is a dedicated powersupply on the motherboard for ur CPU and it work with multible mosfets (transistors) that can raise and lower voltage. The most obvious problem is that one of the VRM's got to hot and a low(draining) mosfet broke down shorting the CPU Powersupply to ground (so ur CPU was probably at 0volts here) the VRM explodes and burns, you unpluged the power and it stops.
only thing dead is ur motherboard.
