I have recently bought the Maximus Hero VI from new-egg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131989).

The mother board is installed and seems to work fine but when i un boxed it the plastic cover that is normally on the CPU socket was off and just tumbling around on the motherboard.

My question is, should i get a replacement or should i just keep it? New-egg told me that its not normal for the plastic cover to be off.

Could this be a used motherboard? Or did the socket come off during shipping?

If you looked you would notice the marks they are hard to miss. If your system is running fine I'd just keep it and enjoy the system.
If you already installed it and it works fine it's probably is fine. When you were going to put the CPU in did any of the pins look damaged? When you went to install the motherboard did the holes on the motherboard look like they had been used? Did they have screw marks on them?

If the motherboard is working just fine, I wouldn't worry about it. The plastic cover is to protect the pins in the CPU socket. If the computer boots up fine with a CPU installed, it's safe to say the pins are fine.

It could be a used motherboard, but I have seen some of those covers fit loosely on the socket, where a hard bump could knock them off.
