If i change motherboards in a system running windows 98 will it need a re install or will the motherboard read the hard drive? In this specific case the machine in question is a till at a store and the hard drive runs the program for the till. The original motherboard is discontinued and some people are asking outrageous amounts for a board that runs DDR memory it's absurd!

Solution
Check the Northbridge and Southbridge chipsets. If they're the same as your old motherboard, you only "might" have to re-install the OS. You might be able to get away with an OS Repair. If they're different, you almost certainly will have to re-install the OS.

Unfortunately, the OS that is installed on the hard drive is looking for the old motherboard hardware. If you connect the old hard drive to the new motherboard, it's likely the system will fail to boot and you'll need to re-install the operating system.

Even if it has the same specs specifically the one in it supports LGA 775 Celeron Celeron D Pentium and Pentium D and DDR 400 Memory etc it's a older style motherboard for sure but i've found one with the same specs as it but its just a different brand of intel motherboard still gonna result in the same problem?
