Hi all,

I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 SFF and i recently bought an i7-3820 LGA2011 Processor. Its too big for my motherboard. I'm looking to see what motherboard i can replace it, if any, to support this processor whilst being the same size for my case and allowing me to still use my low profile graphics card and DDR3 RAM.

The current motherboard is a Dell 0WR7PY.

Thank you.

That is a small form factor size motherboard. That is a custom size for your Dell case.

Retail boxed motherboards don't use that form factor.

The i7-3820 will require you to also have an X79 Express motherboard (with the LGA2011 socket). These are 2011-12 era parts so you would likely need to get something on eBay. This Chinese knock off generic model would work with a case that supports standard Micro-ATX motherboards.

My advice would be to get a CPU that fits that computer. MB swaps with Dells are very difficult, and often impossible. Theye're best considered as whole individual computers. Here are the builds for that system. Many of them with big GPUs will be Tower models with upgraded PSUs. But the CPUs should be realistic choices.

i7-3770 looks like King of the Hill there.

Thanks for the replies.

So you think I'd best getting a new motherboard with a new case? I have a lot of parts already - 500GB SSD, 12GB DDR3 RAM, low profile GeForce 1030 Graphics card and the i7 processor mentioned.

So with a new motherboard (assuming it'll be DDR3 Hynix HMT351U6CFR8C PC3-12800 1600Mhz compatible), a new power supply and a new case that should do the job? I'll also be looking to add a GTX 1050 TI 4GB Graphics card to this, preferably not low profile but if i have to do that i will.

Does anyone have a recommendation on a motherboard on the basis of that? Lowest price as possible.

Thanks for the help.

If you going to play with Optiplexes get the Mini Tower. Aftermarket PSUs, Full height video cards. You can go to userbenchmark.com and enter the system your looking at there to see what the potential is. Anything else puts you into low profile GPU, and proprietary PSU territory.
You might post a question about a budget build, if you want to start with a MB, case etc. Dell just isn't very good for that.
List what RAM, and CPU you have and I'm sure you'll get suggestions for MB and case. Don't skimp on PSU quality though. Read actual reviews by testers, not user opinions. There's a lot of junk out there.

Thanks William,

I was looking at the link you posted earlier and on the website it says an i5 3470 would fit my current setup? I may compromise for that, would it definitely fit?

Thanks.

Yes. userbenchmark.com shows running configurations that passed a benchmark to be listed there. Optiplexes almost always have a 95W CPU limit. So not all processors will run in them. If you look at the CPU scores you will see the i7-3770 running there also. Be sure you have the latest BIOS from Dell, CPU support can be updated there.
