Im having some pretty strange keyboard issues right now, where half of the keys dont register at all, and the up arrow key only works sometimes. I know the fault isnt with my keyboard, because Ive tried using another keyboard and that doesnt work either, but heres where gets weird. The keys that dont work wit my original keyboard, such as the bottom row, H, numbers, the arrow keys, actually work with the other keyboard. So I have both plugged in (one using usb, and the other using PS2) together so I can have full functionality (split over two keyboards).

So Im assuming its a motherboard problem. Has anyone seen something like this before? What should I look for in trying to fix this, or should I take my PC to a specialist?

Solution

As you said in your first post, this is a pretty strange issue. I've never seen...

Ive tried both updating and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and it hasn't worked at all.

Resetting the keyboard settings hasn't changed anything either unfortunately.

Try this keyboard testing software and see if it tells you anything.

https://www.passmark.com/products/keytest.htm

You could also try Setting up a virtual machine on your computer using VirtualBox and see if your keyboard works properly inside the virtual operating system. You could test both Windows and Linux.

So using keytest I dont know anything that different, just that the keys that arent working arent even registered as being pressed at all.

Ive never set up a virtual machine before, so Ill have to give it a try. However Im not sure if its worth mentioning that both the on-screen keyboard, and typing using my phone as a keyboard (the air keyboard app) both work. I also tried connecting my USB keyboard through the PS2 slot using an adaptor to see if different keys work, thats not the case, its still just the top two rows, and the number pad, excluding G, and H.

Ill try and find a spare third keyboard too, to see if a different combination of keys work.

As you said in your first post, this is a pretty strange issue. I've never seen this problem before. But if your keyboard and USB drivers are correct, and Windows is set to use the standard QWERTY keyboard layout, i can't see why your motherboard would be causing the problem.

I'm thinking if the keyboard works properly inside a virtual machine, that would suggest the problem is in your operating system, but If it has the same problem inside the virtual machine, the keyboard itself is probably faulty.
