motherboard not reading 16 gb

Hi, I had recently built a gaming pc and this is my first time. It works fine but it's nothing fancy.
I have a problem with the memory though...

My Asus M5A97 R2.0 is only reading one 8gb stick when I have two plugged in. The memory G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory. My cpu is an amd FX-6300 six core processor.

I've tried everything, each memory slot is fine and both sticks work. Why is it not reading 16 gb when I check?

make sure the mb has the newest bios file to rule out a bios bug. if it not a bios bug it could be a bad memory controller.

What OS? I.e. Win 7 Home Basic only supports 8GB. Try the sticks together is slots 1-2 to see if it's a channel problem
