Hi, I'm working on my first PC build and I've run into a brick wall. My motherboard is not receiving power from my power supply. I have tested my power supply using the paper clip test, and it seems fine.
Motherboard: msi mortar b250m

Power supply: evga 750w

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!

Solution
No it would not.
But I did not mean to say that you actually destroid it nor that it even the PSU as root cause. Merely a suggestion.
I'm just saying that some types of PSU do not cope well with these things.

Sure You can test it again with the paper-clip method: follow this instruction carefully:
WikiHow: How to check a power supply
Hi,

How can you tell?
Are you sure that the two most important connectors to the mobo is properly attached: one is the 24-pin and the other 8-pin connector which gives power to the CPU.

Now, if the mobo won't start, not necessary means no power:
I your memory are not seated properly for example, the processor won't even start.

So my question again: how do you know that the mobo doesn't get power?

That is strange, unless a brand new power supply (PSU) is gone, I would perhaps say you got to recheck everything.
That does not happen often.

In the back of the PSU, besides the main switch you turned on, sometimes it is a small letterbox with a fuse.
Check this - if applicable.
🙁

there was nothing on the back of my psu. Do you think this is a psu problem or a motherboard problem?

Are you completely sure that everything is connected properly?
Re-check.

After that I have only one suggestion; replace the PSU.
There are ways of how to check the PSU, but since t is a new build it will hurt the warranty, besides some of the switched psu:s requires a certain load before it even starts.

So, maybe the problem lays within the mobo or one of the mobo connectors which is not on the right spot?
There could also be another explanation.
For. ex you have some cables coming down from the front panel: including reset, power on, HDD-led, audio headphone, USB etc.

If you had mounted the front power switch connector (pwr marking on the mobo) to another location, the PSU will never fire up.
That is the reason I suggest that you double check every connector to the mobo.

Ok, I'll make sure I double check everything tomorrow. It's also a partially new build, I've had the psu for around a year and I've been running only a graphics card with it while using a paper clip to turn it off and on (long story). Would this have anything to do with my problem?

Oh yes. "Paper clip" checking only works on certain psu:s and can easily destroy the psu.
Do You have a friend or someone you can just borrow a psu from, from a scrapped cmputer?

It wont require much for just starting up, probably less than 200W and not more than 250W.
Just to check if there is a problem with the PSU or not.

[Edit] I am sorry for my poor english grammar.

I don't, but I think I know what I need to do now. If the paper clip test destroyed the psu, would the psu still turn on when using it?

The powersuply start the fans?
I have the same problem the power supply fan will turn with the case fan (molex) when I connect the 24 pin halfway, is my Mobo dead?
