Today while playing a game my PC suddenly turned off and restarted instantly, followed by a faint burning smell. I immediately unplugged the PC and did a check of all components, nothing looked burnt or melted, including all wires. I plugged it back int o check if it booted and it did. Everything works perfectly, except for sound. no onboard (Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High definition audio device)) works. neither detect plugged in headphones (3.5 mm) on the front or back of the PC. The motherboard is an ASUS Z97A. the only working sound comes from my BENQ GL2460 which has it's own hipset. would purchasing a sound card be an option to fix this or would it be safer to replace the MOBO?

Please list your specs like so:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:

Include the make and model of your PSU, not just it's wattage. It's age would also be relevant. Include the audio equipment as well and just for the sake of relevance, include a picture of the audio chip area on your board. You should ideally locate the source of that burnt smell to see if anything else is affected.

CPU:Intel core i7-4790K
Motherboard: Asus z97A
Ram: Hyper x Fury 8 Gb x2
SSD/HDD: one SSD and multiple HDD's I've accumulated over the years from old Media systems with no stickers on them
GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070
PSU: Corsair CS750M
Chassis:IN WIN chassis
OS: Windows 10
Headphones: Audiotechnica ATH-M50x, as well as a LOUDBOX Mini amplifier. (both 3.5 mm)

I was not able to locate any burnt areas on the MOBO, and the smell surrounded the whole Chassis before dispersing so I could not locate a source for the smell, however. Picture following shortly.
