Motherboard only detects 1 hard drive at the time

Hi everyone,

I have recently built my first pc with and ssd and a hdd and once i turned the pc on only the hdd (wd 4tb red nas) was detected as a boot drive. I found it strange because the ssd was listed in the Sata Info of the motherboard (asus z170 pro gaming) but did not show as a boot option.
However with the hdd unplugged the motherboard did detect it correctly and i was able to install windows 10 on it. Therefore i know both hard drives work fine, all cables work fine including the power ones since both hard drives are on at the same time but now the hdd is not detected when the ssd is set as the boot drive (still listed in sata Information though for some reason).

This leads me to the conclusion that the motherboard will only accept 1 hard drive at the time, which i find very odd. I already installed all the latest drivers and pretty much tried all tips i could find on the web but this seems like a very unique situation.

At this point i can only assume there is somenthing wrong with the motherboard.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure that all of the drivers are installed on your board. Go to device manager and see if there is a yellow exclamation point on one of the devices. If there is, head over to your motherboard's web site, select your model number and install the necessary drivers. Possibly IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and/or software devices.

Hope this helps.

First try disk manager as you may need to activate the none boot drive. Second check if you have 2 SATA controllers. Some like the M.2 ssds shuts down all sata on one with motherboards that have 2 SATA controls. This may force you to connect the SATA cable to a different range SATA on the motherboard. Say controler one uses 1 and 2 while the other controls 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Thanks for you reply. The second hard drive never shows up in device manager and i have tried all combinations of ports but the result is always the same. Both hard drives are on but the second one is only recognised in Sata Info

Is your bios detecting the two hard drives, or is it just windows?

Its just the bios that sees them both

That is quite strange, but that's one of the many reasons why computers can keep you busy. With all the different makes and models, you just don't know what might happen.
