I had decided to start my new pc build today. Oddly, my pc only powers on when the cpu power cable is plugged out. I am not sure if it is the fault of the motherboard or the cpu. I know for a fact it is not the power supply because i used the same supply in a different pc and it works fine. I have tried checking for a minor short circuit (plugged in outside the case). That did not work. I an using a 9700k processor and a z370 msi gaming plus motherboard

Solution
I would take it all back apart and check to see if there were any pins bent during the installation of the CPU. THAT is the most likely cause of your problem.

The pins will be located on the motherboard for this Intel platform.

The cord I am using from my power supply is indeedthe one designated for the cpu power. it has a label that says cpu.
