Motherboard or Battery problem

Okay, my computer has suddenly heated up greatly and doesn't allow me to turn it in without it being plugged into power? is it a motherboard problem or a battery problem, when i do restart the laptop with it being plugged into power it pops up with a message saying to replace the battery, although i am still wondering what is the problem and how do i fix it? my laptop is a Lenovo thinkpad if that helps>

Your battery is the problem. your motherboard has no issues. try to replace the battery.
