My motherboard died. I have an i7 Skylake K series processor so I am interested in overclocking. If I understand correctly the newest 370 chipset will only support coffee lake processor so I'll need a z170 or 270 chipset board? I'm also running a GTX 1080 Video card.

Looking for a good mid range motherboard what does everyone recommend? I've been looking at ASRock, Asus, and MSI.

Correct, Z170 or Z270 (or the locked variants in the 100 or 200 series).

Realstically, if you just need "functional" (ie no USB-C, no Wifi etc) and support for only moderate overclocking.... I wouldn't put too much thought into it & just pick up the cheapest Zx70 board you can find.

After rebate, you're looking at ~$80 for this ASRock board.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: ASRock - Z170A-X1/3.1 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($81.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $81.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
