i5-8400 is an excellent mid range processor.
You will need a 300 series lga1151 motherboard.
Any chipset will do if you will not be overclocking.
Here is a chart of the options:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1151

How many expansion slots will you use?
For most of us, that is exactly one for the discrete graphics card.
A ATX motherboard will have 7, a M-ATX will have 4 and ITX will have one.
You could probably use any type.

M-ATX may be a bit cheaper than ATX. It will still fit in a atx case.

I do not know that any brand is significantly better or worse than another.

Your parts are not hot, no extra cooling is needed.
What is your case?
If you have two front 120/140mm intakes, that is all you need.
fan headers should not be an issue for motherboard selection.

The better motherboards will have better sound chips and rgb bling if those are important to you.
