Nice set of explanations nikkor^.

There is no "average" motherboard.

But there are three typical sizes.

M-ITX which will have a single slot.
M-ATX which will have 4 slots,
full ATX which will have 7 slots.

All will have at least one pci-e X16 slot for a discrete graphics card.
