I've been planning to upgrade my motherboard from a ASUSTek CM6870 to a Asus Maximus VI Formula. I currently have a GTX 780 and 16GB of ram with a 600CX PSU and Intel core i7 3770k. Can anyone tell me whether or not this is a good idea? or a perhaps a better option?

That's an excellent board.

Otherwise, the Maximus V Formula has the right socket and is excellent. If you're considering mobo's that expensive though you might just want to get a Maximus VII Hero and a new i5-4690K.
Think to yourself; "Do I really need a MOBO with features I won't use?"

The formula is great and all, but I doubt the common gamer would use its features.

I recommend the ASUS Maximus VII Hero. 200 dollar MOBO that is a great middle man.

EDIT: got mixed up on CPU cooler compatability and MOBO compatability. Apologies, as you will need a Z-77 type MOBO.

also, if you change your motherboard chances are that a fair number of hardware-bound programs (Windows being an important one) will stop working or require reactivation. Not recommended to change your motherboard unless it's broken.

What is your opinion the ASRock Z77 Extreme4?
