Hi everyone.
I am looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard over the coming weeks. I've currently got the below:
Case: Corsair 780T full tower
CPU: i7 6700K (4.0 GHz)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VIII Ranger RoG
Memory: 32GB DDR4 Kingston FURY Beast
Graphics: 8GB GeForce GTX 1080
1st Drive: 2 TB Samsung 850 EVO 2.5 SSD
2nd Drive: 6TB WD Black SATA
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S
DVD Drive: 16x Blu-Ray drive
PSU: Corsair 850W RMx series Modular 80 Plus Gold
The full list can be found here:
Overclocking: No. Never done it before and not really interested. I tend not to tinker with settings at all!
Location: UK
Monitor: Acer Predator running at 1920x1080. Will potentially upgrade at some point in the future.
Budget range: £1000
I was torn for a while between the i5-13600k or the i7-13700k, but have elected to go for the i7, as I think it may last me a bit longer before having to upgrade again. The PC is mainly used for gaming (everything from the latest AAA's, Cyberpunk, Spider-Man, etc, all the way down to point and click adventures), as well as movie watching, catching up on YouTube vids and the like. Work wise, it is used mostly for Word documents and similar, so nothing too strenuous (I think!).
I'm pretty confused about motherboard choice, tbh. I've looked so many thread and video recommendations, but feel more lost than ever. As someone who's not bothered about overclocking and RGB, I am trying to find something that would suit what I'm looking for (I could even upgrade to DDR5 memory should the need arise, but don't think it's too necessary?). I've looked at everything from the Asus ROG Strix B760-A, to the Asus Prime Z690-P D4, to the MSI Tomahawk range and... I haven't a clue.
As I said the CPU and motherboard will be the main changes; I've been thinking about the graphics card too, but am not sure if it still holds up for some of the latest and upcoming titles. If not, any recommendation for that would be appreciated too. I'm hoping to have whichever components I choose for a good while to come (I've had my current system since 2016!).
I'm assuming the cooler is still ok? I've read lots of articles about how the 13th gen range needs liquid cooling (which I don't really want) as it gets very hot; conversely, I've heard others say it isn't as bad as those reports say.
If you've read all that, I applaud you, thanks! Any assistance would be really helpful, even if it's just to point me in the right direction.
