I'm upgrading the CPU in my gaming PC and I'm not sure if my current motherboard will support it or what I would need to upgrade it to.

GPU: GTX 1050 TI
CPU: Intel i5-2310
Motherboard: GA-B75-D3H
8gb RAM

The cheapest option would be less than $100. The better option would be something like this, for CPU upgrade.

PCPartPicker Part List: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/z2MMQq

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3300X 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($119.99 @ B&H)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 74.34 CFM CPU Cooler ($29.28 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard ($114.99 @ Best Buy)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 Memory ($82.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $347.25

If better gaming is the goal, though, you might be better off with the Xeon upgrade, that I mentioned earlier, and getting a better...
What cpu are you upgrading to?

The best cpu that board supports (I thinks that a pretty budget board so idk how well it will run, but atleast support)
is the i7 7700k, which is not a good value nowadays.

on ebay its around 200-250$, while the new ryzen 3 3300X performs exactly the same
and is 120$ (even with a new motherboard it will be less than 200$)

Why do you want 6400, do you plan on having it from someone second hand?
If you didn't bought it... don't go there.
If you can find i7 3770 (or 3770k), that cpu is even better, and you wont need to change either Motherboard or Ram!!!
Friend found it stored away still brand new so was looking to upgrade my current i5 2410.

The CPU I plan on buying is the i5 6400 I listed in my specs. Sorry for the confusion.
What cpu do you have now?
What is your budget?
I presume you will be buying used.

The i5-6400 will not run on your current motherboard.
A motherboard that will run a i5-6400 will also need ddr4 ram.

You may find that a simple cpu upgrade on your current motherboard is the cheapest thing to do.

If you are buying new, look for a current gen intel or amd processor/motherboard and ddr4 ram.

My current CPU is a i5 2410. The 6400 was being given to me free.
I haven't quite decided what to budget myself at but I'd say a few hundred dollars for sure. Give or take.

Just sell all the things you have and has been given..
Buy Ryzen 3300 (x preferably )
DDR4 Ram
B450 Mobo
That is a worthy upgrade....

Spending money on Mobo and ram to jump from i5 2410 to i5 6400 (even given freely) is meaningless, the jump in performance wont be that much... and you're still paying MOBO and ram ...

First make sure your bios is up to date. 2nd, go to Ebay and find you a Xeon E3 1230v2, or better. They are cheaper than an i7, with the same performance. This would be the easiest/cheapest option.

I agree that selling it all, and getting a 3300x, motherboard, and ddr4 3200, is the better choice, though.

We addressed all of the ram and mobo change in the posts above :)
He is planing to buy ram (ddr4) and mobo just to move from i5 2410 to i5 6400 ><
I seen that after I posted that is why I edited my post.

When new post are done in minutes you can't see all of them when your posting!

140 Bucks to make it work unless he also needs a new operating system that could be the case.

Roughly how much would that be? Less than 500$?
I'm not set yet how much money I want to spend.
Cheapest option being a couple hundred dollars might have to do for the time being.
Just exploring all my options.

Thank you everyone again for the input and guidance.

Hi. What would an i5 6400 2.7Ghz, Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM and H110m S2 Gigabyte motherboard sell for if I wanted to sell it all off and build a new PC?

I have an EVGA 500B 80 Plus.
The frame loss causing my stutter of a slideshow I deal with now makes games unplayable from time to time.
I've always had frankenstein lower performing PCs.
Not looking to have amazing mind blowing graphics just looking for something that will handle newer(ish) games moderately well without locking up on my screen from time to time (if that gives any extra information).

Not a great PSU, but would allow you to run something like a 1650s, safely enough, with one of those Xeon E3's, in the cpu support list. It has to be at least a 1230, though, for 4c/8t. 1220/1225 Xeons are 4c/4t CPU's, and no better than your current i5, really.

The 3300x is a solid option, as it trades blows with the 7700k. It also gets you on a more modern platform, with an upgrade path. B550 boards should be out, mid June, as well, if you can wait that long. I do believe much of your problem is CPU related, as 4c/4t gaming is essentially dead, for modern titles.
