motherboard won't power on, psu clicks once. PSU is good.

My computer has stopped powering up. When I press the power button the PSU clicks once and then nothing, no fans, no power. If I press it a second time, nothing.

I tested the PSU with an old board and it powered up fine, so the PSU is good.

I'm guessing my motherboard (asrock 990fx extreme 3) is at fault.

Any recommendations on things to try? Or is my motherboard just dead?

Unfortunately not. But I tested the PSU on a different system and it works fine.

When usually psu clicks, thats a relay doing safe thing, it prevents further damage on components cause there is short somwhere.
Try without CPU connectors only motherboard 24pin.

Also thats probably dead chipset or mosfet somwhere.

If it is the mobo you will pay pretty much the cost of a new mid range to high end am4 mobo for a used fx 990.
So used fx 990 buyer beware.

I tested again but with the 8 pin 12v for the cpu unplugged, and the power supply powers on normally like this. Obviously it doesn't post, but it's something.

what if you use only 4pin? Maybe, just MAYBE the rest of mosfets are dead expect the main ones?
