i'm half way through schooling to take my a+ exam and
i finally decided it was time to build my own machine instead of buying from *ell. i'm a big fan of *alcon computers and they use the asus motherboards. i was wondering what you would suggest. i am planning on a 1ghz thunderbird for the processor w/256mb of ram and a ibm deskstar 45gb hard drive. any suggestion for my 1st home built computer?

What are you planning to use your system mainly on? Games? School assignments?

i'm a gamer. c&c, diablo 1&2, warcraft 2, septerra core and the soon to be released black & white. also, now with the release of the geforce 3, the 2's are dropping in price & i plan on putting one in the machine.

with the kind of games you play though, your video card won't be used to it's max...

JrPuter is right; you wouldn't be using that video card to its full potential. However, you can expect price drops on the GF2 once GF3 is out.

i agree about the video card but the trouble is with voodoo gone there really is no other choice unless someone knows of a good ati that does glide titles and that's what most of those games are. anyway, back to the orignal question. any suggestion for the motherboard?

um... glide? isn't glide dead now?
go with an ati if you want but i prefer asus' GeForce2...
and as for the mobo, if i were gonna buy a computer, i'd wait 'til the KT266 and the AMD760 chipsets mature 1-2 months...
