Question Motherboard's HDMI-In port is not working ?

ASRock Z87 Extreme 4 motherboard has an HDMI-In port but when a DVD player HDMI is connected I cannot find the signal.

footnote when the case mounted (LG and no name) DVD players are used for TV show DVDs they are frequently not playable but even the least expensive Panasonic stand alone player can play them. some used DVD have been "sandpapered" and are just not playable but there is a big difference in the capability of the stand alone and case mount.

alternative might be an USB connectable player but the motherboard HDMI in SHOULD work.

is there a "quality" case mount player?

P.S. ASRock no longer recognizes this model in search

maybe update the BIOS

try a different HDMI cable

which monitor are you using and how did you connect it to the motherboad? Looking at the manual, only HDMI out is compatible to this
are you using the app A-Tuning?

" If there is no video displayed on your monitor, make sure that the cables are properly
connected and make sure that “Deep S5” option in BIOS SETUP is set to [Disable]."

If you require a standard 5.25in internal DVD player and not a Blu-ray player, I would expect virtually any $20 to $30 SATA drive to work. You might have to buy a DVD-RW drive, even if you don't want to record any discs.

I've never owned a motherboard with an HDMI input. Certainly my Asus Z87-Plus doesn't have such a feature on the rear connectors associated with the mobo. It does have an HDMI connector but it's an output and only when the CPU incorporates an iGPU, i.e. it's not an input.

Is your HDMI input on a frame grabber PCI/PCIe card? Perhaps you're mistaking an HDMI output for an HDMI input?

it's a passthrough hdmi input for sure, soldered on the motherboard
Yes, I've found it in the User Guide (the HDMI input connector is mounted at right agles to the HDMI output connector).

Have you followed Page 34 Step 3 and double clicked on the 'A-tuning' icon on the Desktop? I assume this requires a specific Asrock driver/program combination needs to be installed. Are there any yellow warning triangles in Device Manager implying failure to load a driver?

I think @helpstar has covered everyhing else I can think of.

"M" ? user guide? install guide English ends at pg29 and the quide / tutorial in UEFI is a cartoon. Where can I find the guide you reference?

Yes, I would agree that some driver is required but nothing appears in device manager indicating that HDMI "in" exists. USB ports are noted etc.
Frankly, I expected that the HDMI in would function similar to an USB or e-sata and be chosen in the windows sidebar.

to fill in some blanks the HDMI cables are all functional ... I know it can be problematic and is a bit like did you remember to turn the computer on ... The monitor is a 55 inch samsung TV and it functions just fine when the computer is running W7 or Mint and of course can play DVDs thru the SATA side. Also functional when the player is HDMI connected directly to the TV/monitor

Intel i74790, RX560 is the HDMI out to the TV/monitor

Does passthru mean direct connection from in to out without computer software interaction?
If so it is a meaningless port as the player can simply be HDMI connected to the monitor. Perhaps designed for a time (mid teens) when monitors had limited inputs? How then would "source" be chosen?
More importantly there would be no control of the DVD other than the awkward and limited remote control. But now that I think about that the signal from the player will not be a simple stream it will already be processed by the player with all the functionality resident in the player.

PROBLEM SOLVED - INAPPROPRIATE USE OF AN INPUT

ASRock had this on the Z87 but dropped for the 97

The $20 & 30 SATA drives are the problem described - read function is clearly inferior to a cheap and not so cheap Panasonic stand alone player. Hard to believe it is a software problem as it is the same in windows 7, 10, 11 and the latest MINT in a total of 3 different DVD player programs. More likely the laser and the associated chip ability to read a less than perfect DVD i.e. cheap design.

That HDMI in is just a pass through nothing more. Source, hdmi in, motherboard out to the monitor the PC doesn't even need to be cut on.

You can set a hot key in A tuning or whatever they call it to switch from using the PC to the hdmi in source.

thank you for the link to the manual
I will grab the one for my B550 X4 while it is relatively new.

From the collected responses we should conclude that the IN port is of very limited, if any, value.
As it has been USB, firewire etc will continue to be used for external sources.
