Motherboards. Is there a difference?

Wanting to upgrade a 2013 model computer for gaming use, and I was wondering if motherboards really make a difference in speeds, such as a 6GB/s Motherboard with a 6GB/s Solid State Drive. Would any old motherboard that worked with DDR3 RAM and was an AM3+ (which is the type I'm going for) work? Or do better ones have better speeds up to a certain point?

Also if there is a difference, could someone tell me if the ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard would be a good motherboard, or for around the $100 range, is there something far better?

Thanks :)

Actually I'm not quite sure yet what the motherboard is. It's in my grandmother's computer, and she won't be using her computer anymore or living at home anymore, so I'll be using it. Would it at the least though be better to have something even at $50, slightly more advanced in technology, or do you think a computer manufactured in 2013 would have an up-to-date enough MOBO?

Would it also be necessary since I'm doing a new processor as well, or can I just remove the processor off the current motherboard?
