I have planned on using a Samsung 870 EVO 2TB. It is of course 2.5" and does not come with an adaptive carrier. The computer was made in 2009 when 3.5" SSDs ruled. I see some adaptive carriers for sale, but it seems to me that they are for putting a smaller disc into a drive bay. Would an adaptive carrier be needed for a boot disc? I will have the work done at a shop, and I would like to take them everything they need to do the work so I won't miss the computer for very long.

HP does not have very much helpful documentation for this computer any more. I see that in some computers the boot drive isn't really in a bay, it just plugs in and is somewhat cradled on the motherboard. I hope one of your readers know how the inside of mine is laid out.

I do not plan to keep the current boot drive in the computer since it was installed in 2016 and I am replacing it because sometimes the computer is shutting down due to "memory management".

2.5" SSD doesn't need to be bolted down since it doesn't have any moving parts nor does it vibrate, as 3.5" HDD does. But for peace of mind, you can let them to screw it to the PC case/drive cage.

As far as adapters go, there are several. Pick what you like.
E.g this "sleeper" enclosure, which looks and is same size as 3.5" HDD but in actuality, can house 2.5" drive inside it,
