Hey, I recently received an old dell E520 desktop computer from a friend who was going to trash it and thought I would make it a project box. There are two issues: when xp launches and you get to the desktop page the error message "This application has failed to start because gamevancelib32.dll was not found" appeared, and the mouse and keyboard do not function. I'm rather confident that these issues are software related because the devices are getting power via the USB, the keyboard works in the boot menu, and I can use the mouse and keyboard when booting from a USB with Ubuntu.

I was told elsewhere that these to problems are independent of each other but I'm not sure. Also another recommended fix was to go into the device manager to enable the mouse and keyboard but I dont know how I would access that without either of the devices.

If the only courseof action is to remove xp then I guess I'll do that but I wanted to try and make a dual boot system.

Thanks for any help in advance
Nick M.

Re-install Windows, it's clear that it's not a good build that you'd want to use as it has at least one spyware on it already and the USB drivers are messed up. Even if you manage to get this working with a repair setup you are likely to find that it has a dozen other issues that need to be fixed.
A quick google of gamevancelib32.dll shows it to be a browser helper file that tracks your internet travels. As such, it is adware or malware and you don't want it. If the error message shows it missing that's good, but, there must be a reference to it in your system startup. Try booting into safe mode. If the mouse/keyboard work, you can proceed to remove the rest of the malware. It's probably a toolbar or something you should be able to uninstall.

I tried safe mode and the keyboard and mouse still dont function but when xp is done launching it sends me to the log in screen where you see all the user profiles instead of just going straight to the main users desktop screen
