Mouse and Keyboard not working during windows 8.1 Installation

Hey guys. I booted up my own computer that I built for the first time, and it went into uefi. It not detect my ssd that i planned to use as boot drive. I hooked up my mouse and keyboard. The pointer appeared and the led on my keyboard was glowing, I don't know if the keyboard worked in the actual bios, but the mouse moved and I was able to set optical reader as first boot. I inserted the windows disk and restarted my pc. It started installing windows and my mouse worked for the first portion of it. I left the room. I came back and it was at the personalization screen and neither my mouse and my keyboard would work, and the led on my keyboard was off. I turned of my pc and restarted several times. It would switch off between going to the language selection screen and where I was before, the personalization screen. Every time the led on the keyboard would stay on until it went past the windows tile with the little rotating circle underneath it. then it would turn off. I tried pressing delete to enter the bios when prompted during boot, but it didn't work, even though my keyboard led will still be on at this point. I don't know what to do. I can't install windows, and I can't enter my UEFI. My motherboard is the asus z97-a. Somebody please help. I am afraid that my $2,000+ dollar build is broken.

Are you using USB 3 ports? If so move to a USB 2 port (black port on the back IO ports)
