Mouse/keyboard suddenly stop working; common fixes haven't worked

Good evening everyone. i'm stumped on this one. I've been using Win10 on my laptop for about a year, with no recent changes in hardware. Overnight, my mouse and keyboard suddenly quit working. I checked Device Manager and both items are listed as being working correctly. I tried to unplug them both from their respective USB ports then plug back in, and in that instance they're listed in Other Devices and the system claims they have no drivers, even when I navigate right to them.

I checked the filters setting for the keyboard in Ease Of Access, and it was Off. Looked through any similar settings for the mouse and didn't see anything amiss there.

When I tried to uninstall them, then rebooted, they were listed again when I restarted even though I hadn't plugged them back in yet. So either they didn't actually uninstall or they automatically reinstalled without my plugging them back into the laptop.

When I ran troubleshooter, it did change some things (didn't tell me what) and then said to reboot. I did and that didn't fix anything.

I plugged them into another laptop and they both still work.

Three more oddities:
1. while each device has its own driver, they also each use a driver called i4084.sys which is in the Drivers directory. If that single driver file has become corrupted somehow, that would affect both devices. I went online to look for updated downloads of that file and couldn't find one. I might be able to retrieve that file from another laptop, or from our backups. Should I try that?

2. Both the mouse and the keyboard get power when I first plug them in, and when the machine is first booting up. The keyboard NumberLock light is lit, and the optical mouse laser is powered. Then after about 5 -10 seconds, they lose power. Something in the computer is cutting the juice to those USB ports.

3. When I unplug them and then check Device Manager, they still show up as being installed.

i'm just not sure what else to do at this point. Thanks for any suggestions and help!

Solution
Oops, I should correct something. The driver file they share is named "i8042prt.sys". I gave the wrong file name in the original post. Thanks again in advance.

Solution

I have had 3 customers that had this issue and we found it was a Microsoft update on Feb 13th that was the culprit. There are 3 things you need to do. You have done 2 of them but not the most important which is to uninstall that last update! See this post on our site for details - https://www.naplestech.com/windows-10-lost-keyboard.html

Hope this helps it fixed it for us. Thanks
