Mouse problems with Linux on new build

I'm working on my first build and having some issues with it, mostly due to my inexperience. I thought I could reuse my old optical drive but it's not SATA and won't connect to the new mb. I'd planned on loading Linux from a DVD but now I can't. As a work around, I was able to create a bootable USB drive using a borrowed computer.

When I start the new computer (no preexisting OS) with the bootable USB drive, it gives me a few choices. If I click <start Linux>, my mouse quits working but Linux starts up as expected. I'm concerned about doing an OEM install if I'm having this problem. The mouse works just fine in BIOS and the keyboard isn't having any problems. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what's wrong and how to fix it?

CPU: AMD FX8350
MB: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 R5
16G DDR3
1TB WD hard drive
mouse:Logitech LX3 (wired but not USB)
bootable USB has Linux Mint 18

Linux doesn't care about the mouse while it's booting. Once you reach a GUI it should work. And you don't want an OEM install, you want a standard one.

It looks like Mint 18 doesn't care about the ps2 ports while booting... or after installation. I have a ps2 keyboard that won't work on it. The light on the keyboard turns on, but still doesn't register any keystrokes. Fortunately usb keyboards are the least expensive peripherals available.

I figured it out. What I thought was my mouse connector was really the keyboard. The mouse is USB after all. when I moved it to the USB3.0 the mouse worked. I'd come across USB 2.0 problems listed on the internet before so I know there's a fix for those.
