Movies and videos are a blocky mess

When playing a movie or watching a video, the dark scenes and some bright ones look blocky. By blocky I mean big pixels making up the colors, they look as if pixelated. I have a BenQ GL2460HM powered by an FX 8300 and a GTX 1060, I've downloaded the latest nvidia drivers. Could this be because of my LED monitor?

Greetings!

It could be a difference in resolution output from your card/pc and the resolution capabilities of your monitor. If you are trying to push a higher resolution to your screen than it can handle, it will attempt to interpolate the grading of shades (particularly in greyscales) and can give the effect of blockiness or banding. I would start be ensuring that you are pushing out a resolution that is the resolution of your monitor (if it is different) and see if that changes anything. This may not be what is happening, but it is the easiest place to start (assuming you haven't tried this already).

Hope this helps!

Where did the movies and videos come from? Does it happen with every single media player?

K-Lite Full

VLC

Media Player Classic 64

WMP

Etc.

I use hulu for movies and shows, the streaming quality is set to HD, my monitors resolution is 1920x1080.

I use hulu and youtube plus some other websites when I can't find certain movies on hulu.

I Hulu is attempting to push a 4K image to your screen, this may be the cause. I don't use Hulu, but maybe you can set it to output at only 1080p? Also, check your display settings in "control panel" just to make sure you don't have your resolution overall set too high.

My monitor is running in its native resolution. Hulu isn't the only source of the problem. Youtube also has the same problem.

Agreed. Even if 1080p is too much for your internet connection you will get those artifacts. What about DVDs and other pre-recorded media?

What's your download speed?

Have you called them to discuss the issue? If I pay for something it will work right.

I pay for 6 down, I checked on task manager and saw that it sometimes hits the 6 down mark. I have a movie on my hard drive and the same thing happens. I have not called them about the issue since I haven't seen any throttling but if it is a problem with my isp, I'll definitely call them.

Hello again,

If it is happening with a saved file as well, then your isp is not the likely culprit. Have you checked your settings in control panel yet? Try that and let us know if there is a change...just trying to rule out the simple first...

The resolution for my monitor is native to my display, forgot to add that I run a 2 monitor setup. One is 1366x768 and my main is 1920x1080, the pixelation is more visible on my main than on my secondary. Don't know what settings to change on my control panel that could possibly fix this issue.

Oh! Just go to Control panel, then select Display, and then choose Adjust Resolution...this will bring you to the window that allows you to set your overall resolution output from the pc to the monitor(s). Double check that they are set to the recommended resolution of your panel(s).

Both are on recommended. :/

Hmmmm....Ok, let's try something else super simple...Do you have another cable lying around that you can swap to the main monitor? I have heard of plenty of issues resulting from a cable that is not up to snuff. Just trying to cover all the simple and free troubleshooting I can think of....

I was using a DVI to connect my main display, used a new HDMI I bought a month ago and still got the same resutls. If you look at his jacket you can see what I'm talking about. This was taken from hulu http://i.imgur.com/SHlM9Lk.png

Its your service provider. They have reduced your streaming speed, which in effect alters your picture if you are using a high grade monitor (1080p or above). The conflict is actually a bottleneck. You will find that if you reduce your overall resolution to (1600X900) or 780p, your streams will become clearer. It is your service provider's way of destroying your happiness, for not paying for their cable TV packages. How dare you cut out the middleman....lol
