Hi all, Is there any way to drag and drop picture files in Windows7 ? It seems that I can organize them by folder, month, day, rating or tag but I can't randomly move them around?
I was talking about the desktop, it's the only place where random arrangements would make sense really. You can't turn off arrange in the other folders in Win 7, without some messing around that may make the system unstable.
I can't think of a single reason where you have multiple files that you would ever not want to sort by name or date or size or something along those lines.
And here is a work-around, which I have not tested. Backup your system before trying http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disable-full-row-select-explorer-windows-7/
Yes that is correct, windows 7 will organize the file however you want but no organization (meaning manual organization) does not work. Mac's let you do that, not windows 7 from what i gather. Just make new folders or categories for the way you want to organize.

i thought maybe I was going crazy or getting stupid. Will install "Picasa" works fine. Thanks
If you un-check auto arrange, you can move the files however you want. But you can't tell it to "randomly sort" files. Picasa is a great product, but even that organizes is all in categories by date/folders/etc...
Thanks for your response hang9. I've looked all over for the "auto arrange" check box you suggested but I can't find it. I can choose to organize them by folder, month, day, rating or tag. Where exactly is what you suggest?
Tanks

You can drag files any way you want them arranged in PICASA, regardless of their name.

Wrong I LIKE TO SEQUENTIALLY NUMBER CERTIAN PHOTOS IN THE ORDER I LIKE IN A FILE ie 001 002 003 etc..Its totally dumb of microsoft not to allow me to put them in the order I want. This is a major omission, It aids me greatly when I have to choose specific photos in say a similiar batch in priority for ultimate selection. These photos may also look similar. Win 7 hype was this O/S was more flexible utter rubbish. For this reason alone I would not have purchased win 7. Can't you see how stupid it is to have to look for say a favorite photo out of many in a file when all I have to look is at the 1st one ie 001 and so on. It is essential to any photographer. Selecting from a page of similiar photos / Dragging photos to a higher position in the same file ie sorting quality etc..is so useful it is astounding it was dropped from win 7. a backward step. Yes the other options are also useful ie size of file etc. BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT OPTION IS NOW MISSING FOR ME.

Thanks but I'm not interested in a "work around". I don't want to mess around with the functionality of the OS. I just want to arrange pictures in an order that I like them to display. Say for a presentation. Windows 98, Vista and XP all did. Windows 7 does not. A big step back in my mind and I'm surprised they did that.
