I have a GTX 960 which I believe I have had for a few years. It works really good. I have been thinking about updating but I am not sure which card to buy. I like the 300 dollar range. Would the step up from a GTX 960 to a 2060 or one of the other comparable cards be a big step up? I want to do VR and I have noticed a few jumps in animation when playing Borderlands 3. Not sure if it's just a slow CPU though. I5 3.3 I believe. I don't have anything overclocked and would probably not mess with that as I don't know what I am doing.

Solution
It works i have a b450 and 3rd series ryzen. Some sites have not been updated yet But it works
(Some may come With updated bios to supprt and some may need a bios update which might make life harder for you) If you decide to go with b450 and ryzen 3rd be sure to check That . Most cases you will see it at the box(Ready for 3rd gen) . If you insist on a ryzen CPU and dont want all this headache get a X570 board.
Here is a link to emphasize that :https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&sou...aw3qlwvIzMKh92RsnTe7cuMm&ust=1570539056332845
A 2060 should offer close to three times the graphics performance of a 960 in scenarios where its not being limited by the CPU, so yeah, it would be a big step up.

Knowing the exact model of CPU could help though, since "3.3GHz i5" doesn't mean much, as there are 3.3GHz i5s that were released nearly 10 years ago, as well as models with similar clock rates, but higher performance, released much more recently.

Here are my specs. Is this enough?

Motherboard - gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD 3H-B3 SOCKET 1155
video card - GTX 970 ( I thought it was a 960 )
power supply - 850W

system information
System Model: Z68X-UD3H-B3
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG (type: BIOS)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16302MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 12

I want to build a new system but I want to try and stay around $1,000. not sure if that is possible.

What I would really like to know is if I would benefit from a new GPU with my current system. I know my motherboard would support a new chip. An i7. Could I get away with a new chip and graphics card or just spend the money for a new board and get the latest generation chip?

I have my eye on this card
https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeF...ords=gtx+1660&qid=1568851703&s=gateway&sr=8-1

and this board

Your Psu and Memory are good enough for any Gpu you are thinking about . I have seen that you mentioned the rtx 2060 . it is a great card I have it and it performs great and its a lot better than the 1660 and defiantly worth the extra money . The Board you mentioned is a good one but that means you have to get a new 8th or 9th gen intel cpu too . for the rtx 2060 the i5 9600K is a great Prosecor . if you are willing to add more you can get the i7 8700k . don't bother pairing the rtx 2060 with your current Cpu because it will bottleneck so hard . and your mobo is kinda old so get a new one if possible ( the one you mentioned is great)

Mobo: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-TUF-X57...keywords=x570&qid=1568880891&s=gateway&sr=8-1 (199$)
GPU:https://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Rad...words=5700+xt&qid=1568880933&s=gateway&sr=8-6 (419$)
RAM: https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Veng...d=1568881089&s=gateway&sr=8-2#customerReviews (95$)
CPU: https://www.amazon.com/AMD-Ryzen-37...ryzen+7+3700x&qid=1568881216&s=gateway&sr=8-2 (330$)
Total: 1040$. You can replace 3700x with Ryzen 5 3600 to drop at 900$. You can keep your storage , psu and case from your current computer. 5700xt competes with 2070 super from nvidia and it is far better from 2060 6gb.

You can try that but dont expect great performance boost due to the bottleneck you will get . I paired i5 7400 and rtx 2060 and it was a horrible idea none of the new games exceeded 60 fps at high settings .until i got the ryzen 3600x then everything changed

I purchased the card and yea, there is a bottleneck. I haven't noticed a any improvement really but I needed to buy it anyway because it is time to update my computer. I will get the motherboard and CPU soon.

Yea The X570 Chipset Only works with ryzen Cpus . You cant pair an intel CPU with it .
If you want to upgrade To A newer intel CPU (8th or 9th gen) you would have to get a 300 chipset Board Like Z390 oe z370

I have always had Intel. Is there any reason to switch to the Ryzen? I do like the options the X570 board has to offer. I don't know that I would ever use them but it looks like a nice board

You seem like you dont have much experience with pcs and such and you obviously can spend your money how you want but people just recomend expensive components and then people seem to think they need them , I mean future proofing is cool and everything but it's not guaranteed.

E.g
x570 plus motherboard = £192
Ryzen 3700x = £330
=£492
Will perform great especially if you want to overclock as the motherboard will provide good vrms and a decent bios but then you will probably want a decent cooler to boot instead of the stock wraith.

You could buy instead -
B450 Tomahawk = £96
Ryzen 2600 = £117
= £213

Less than half the price and doubt you will notice much of a performance decrease if any in gaming, gpu dependant that is.

it would be more correct to say that I don't have any recent experience with purchasing hardware and since I am not in the industry and have not had to purchase anything in the last 4 years, I am not sure what I should get. I do have the money to purchase whatever I want but would still like to make smart financial choices. I don't feel the need to spend 500.00 on a processor when I can buy one for 300.00 and get the same performance. I do like the idea of a little future proofing though. I don't want to get something that is on its way out only to have to have my system lock up on the next generation of games or VR. I might decide at a later time to get a more advance VR system than the Rift S I have now. I had my eye on the valve Index.

A Nice B450 Board with Ryzen 3600 is a good pair and will provide great performance and wont be expensive (295$) B450 aorus elite + 3600.
If you want to stay with intel you would have to spend extra 100$ at least for a cpu that can compete with the ryzen 3600 and above like i7 8700

I checked out the B450 and it was saying that it's for Ryzen 1st and 2 gen. Aren't we on gen 3 for that processor? I have been doing some reading and it looks like the Ryzen was built for compatibility going forward. I can afford to spend more. I don't want to buy last generation stuff. I could go with an intel i9 if I wanted to. I am doing some reading on the Ryzen stuff.

what strikes me as being weird is that the Ryzen are 6 core and Intel are 8 usually. I would think 8 was better than 6 but I am seeing the Ryzen being pushed more than Intel.
