Question Moving an M.2 SSD from USB enclosure to an M.2 slot on a new computer ?

Hello,

I am having some issues with my new m.2 drive install for my new PC.

I was moving files from one of my computers to a new PC, my old computer did not have a spare m.2 slot so I used a USB adapter to format the drive and transfer files from the old system to the new. When I installed the M.2 into my new PC, it was functioning fine and seemed to work smoothly. A while later it stopped functioning; it would show up in BIOS and in 'My PC' settings and display data but I could not open folders or access data using outside apps (ex. Steam games loaded on the drive wouldn't launch etc.) When I would try to check for issues in the disk manager it would say 'Drive not ready' and it would continue to not work. I reinstalled the drive and it would work fine, only to stop working after a long session on the computer. I am beginning to suspect it is a heat issue due to this and not related to being formatted in an adapted and then added to a slot on my PC but I wanted to get opinions from people likely smarter than I.

Let me know what you know or think.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

Can you include the make and model of the drive in question as well as the make and model of the motherboard? Speaking of motherboard's what BIOS version are you currently on for said motherboard? As for the drive in question, is it your OS drive or a secondary drive?

Check Windows Event Viewer

Run CrystalDiskInfo

Hello,

Drive model: Samsung 990 EVO Plus 4TB

Motherboard: MSI PRO B650-S WIFI
BIOS is the most recent version

This drive is a secondary drive with only game, photo, and film data on it.

Thank you for reminding me to add some important specification info.

My primary concern was heat related as the secondary drive slot sits under my graphics card (9070 XT) and has no heatsink, but wanted to see if anyone may know of any other problem it could possibly be.
